Information for Prospective Students

Hi, thank you for your interest in working with me! Please click one of the links below that best describe your status. Then it will show you relevant information below.

Current OSU undergraduate students

Are you a current OSU student interested in working as an undergraduate student researcher with me? Thank you for your interest! I have successful experience of working with several undergraduate students. They have been actively participating in our research projects and contributed to the design, development, and evaluation of interactive tools for AI and large datasets.

These are some of the examples of the tools we have been creating:
  • Visualization tools that explain errors in AI systems (e.g., text classification models, reinforcement learning agents)
  • Web interfaces for exploring and analyzing long video data (e.g., YouTube livestream videos)
  • Interactive visualization tools for exploring large datasets (e.g., databases) and analyzing bias in datasets for AI

To help you decide you have a great fit with us, I have a few questions prepared for you. What would be your answers to the following questions?
  • Do you like to design and develop user interfaces?
  • Do you have experience of writing JavaScript programs and/or developing web applications (e.g., using React)?
  • Are you interested in thinking about the human side of AI (e.g., interpretability, bias in data)?

Yes! How can I contact you? If you answered "yes" to some of these questions, you should consider working with us. We often have positions available for undergraduate students. If you are interested, please send me an email with the following information:
  • A short description of why you want to work with me
  • Your resume attached
You are also encouarged to include other materials, such as information about your previous projects, your GitHub link or the code for programs/applications you wrote before (e.g., from your class).

What will happen next? I will get back to you if there is any available position for you. Then we will meet to learn each other. If both of us agree to proceed, you will be doing a starter project. Then you will likely be joining one of our collaborative projects, and we may also be able to hire you as a paid undergraduate researcher. The process may be different if you are applying through other programs like URSA or the Honors College. Looking forward to receiving your email and working with you!

Current OSU Master's students

Are you a current OSU student looking for a thesis advisor? Thank you for your interest in working with me. We rarely have positions available for existing Master's students, but we may have one for you.

To help you decide you have a potential fit with me, I would like to ask you a few questions first. What would be your answers to the following questions?
  • Do you like to design and develop user interfaces?
  • Do you have experience of developing web applications that involved writing of more than 100 lines of JavaScript code?
  • Are you interested in thinking about the human side of AI (e.g., interpretability, bias in data)?
  • Do you like to or have experience of working with many different types of data?

If you answered "yes" to some of these questions, you may consider working with us. If you are unsure, let me ask you another question.
  • Are you mostly interested in developing new deep learning algorithms that are more accurate than the state-of-the-art methods (e.g., image recognition, image generation, reinforment learning agents, language translation)?

If you were unsure after you answered the first three questions, but your answer for this question was "yes, definitely", I recommend you to reconsider contacting me. OSU has a very large number of great faculty members who are working in AI. You should contact them.

If you still think you have a great fit with my research, please send me an email with the following information:
  • Provide a short description of why you want to work with me
  • Provide a short summary of your relevant experience
  • Attach your resume
  • Attach your transcript
  • Provide your GitHub link or share with me the code for one of the programs/applications you wrote before (e.g., from your class). I will not use your program for any other purposes than for evaluating your programming skills. You may not need to provide this if you have strong experience in design and HCI, but otherwise, you will likely involve in the development of tools, and it is important for us to know you have relevant progamming experience.

I will get back to you if there is any available position for you. Looking forward to receiving your email and working with you!

Current OSU PhD students

Are you interested in working with me? Please send me an email.

If you are looking for a committee member, you can contact me, but I may not able to join the committee especially if I have not worked with you before. You likely want to talk to your advisor first, before you contact me.

Prospective Master's and PhD students

Are you considering applying to OSU for your graduate studies? Thank you for your interest in OSU and my research group. Yes we have available positions for you. If you are interested, please apply to our CS or AI program. The deadline is likely around December 15. When applying, please don't forget to write down my name on the "Potential Advisors" field and specify your primary area as "Software Engineering and HCI" or "Artificial Intelligence" in the application form. Then I will very likely review your application. It will unlikely be helpful to send me a cold email before you apply for it, unless there is a strong reason to do so. Please check this website for details about the application process and the program.
